Life in prison for Donegal man over Eddie Friel murder

James Spendley has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Eddie Friel in Killybegs, Donegal. The court heard that Spendley, who suffered from bipolar disorder, killed Friel in a violent, unexplained attack at the victim's home.
Why it matters
The case underscores the intersection of mental health issues and violent crime, as well as the legal system's response to such tragedies.
The family of a 60-year-old man who was murdered in a violent attack at his home in Donegal last year has said they believe his kind and caring nature led to his death.
Eddie Friel was killed by a man he had known for years in what was described as an unexplained and frenzied attack at his home at Harbour View Drive in Killybegs on 12 April 2025.
Today 59-year-old James Spendley of St Cummin's Hill, Killybegs was jailed for life after he pleaded guilty to murder shortly before his trial date earlier this month.
The Central Criminal Court heard that Spendley, who had a history of bipolar affective disorder, had been acting erratically before the killing and that a family member had expressed concerns to Gardai and was trying to get advice from doctors about his medication.
