Liberal Democrats propose legal target of 150,000 new social homes per year in private members’ bill

As part of a private members’ bill, the Liberal Democrats are calling for a legal target of 150,000 new social homes a year.

Gideon Amos, housing spokesperson for the Lib Dems, introduced the private members’ bill yesterday.

Speaking ahead of the second reading of the government’s Social Housing Bill, Mr Amos framed his bill as the “missing half” of ministers’ plans.

He presented the bill as a complementary option to expand on the government’s current legislative framework.

The Lib Dems warned that the Labour government’s approach “lacks the scale needed to solve the housing crisis or protect residents from climate change”.

Mr Amos’s bill would establish a legal target to build 150,000 new social homes each year.
