Leinster looking to 'prove a point' in opening URC rounds

Having made a slow start to last year's URC season, Leinster hooker Gus McCarthy has stressed that the defending champions will have a point to prove this time around.

Leo Cullen's men open their title defence away to the Lions in Johannesburg before a trip back down to sea level to face the Sharks in Durban.

Leinster started last season in South Africa too, but fell to consecutive defeats to the Stormers (35-0) and Bulls (39-31), which gives them plenty of motivation this time around.

"The way we started the season last year away to the Stormers was very, very disappointing", McCarthy said.

"It's something we’ve reflected on and we’re looking to put that to bed.

"It’s a big two games for us now. Hopefully we can prove a point and improve our performances."
