Surgeons of Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur, have successfully corrected severe and longstanding deformities of the left knee in a 70-year-old man from West Bengal through total knee replacement surgery called Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA).
Disclosing this to the media, senior consultant and head of the department of orthopaedics K. Parthiban said the patient had a severe varus deformity, which gave his left leg a bow-legged appearance, an abnormal backward bending of the knee, caused by advanced osteoarthritis, a degenerative condition affecting the joint.
He also had severe osteoporosis, which had weakened his bones, along with significant bone loss and muscle wasting. The shin bone of his left leg had also partially shifted backwards and towards the outer side of the knee, a condition known as posterolateral subluxation.
