Leaders call for more vocational training to support industrialisation

Local leaders and Chinese officials in Uganda have called for increased vocational education and skills training to support industrialization efforts. This appeal was made during the 2026 World Vocational College Skills Competition, Africa Region qualifying round, hosted in Uganda.
Why it matters
Enhancing vocational training is crucial for economic development, job creation, and fostering international cooperation, particularly in developing nations like Uganda, by providing the skilled workforce needed for industrial growth.
Local leaders and Chinese officials have asked the governments of Uganda and China to scale up vocational education and skills training to provide enough manpower for local industries.
The call was made on Wednesday during the opening of the 2026 World Vocational College Skills Competition, Africa Region qualifying round, hosted at Uganda Technical College (UTC) Elgon.
The event brings together students from different institutions to compete in vocational and technical disciplines including mechanical design and manufacturing and electromechanical equipment installation and maintenance.
Mr Laurent Zhang, the administration manager of Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park, said vocational skills are a prerequisite for the industrial workforce.
“I hope China and Uganda governments should continue to carry out more practical cooperation in vocational education, skill training, and youth employment, making skills a bond of friendship between our two countries,” he said.
