Law Society demands immediate release of activist Opoloje

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has demanded the immediate release of human rights activist Praise Aloikin Opoloje, whose whereabouts remain unknown after she was allegedly taken from Namungoona Police Station in Wakiso District by armed security personnel.

Ms Opoloje was reportedly transferred from the police station on Saturday, September 26, after she had been summoned there.

Reports from lawyers and civil society activists say she was taken away by armed men who allegedly did not identify themselves or disclose where they were taking her. Neither the police nor defence authorities had publicly confirmed her detention location or legal status by Sunday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, ULS president Isaac Ssemakadde demanded her immediate release and expressed concern over what he described as a pattern of enforced disappearances.
