Why it matters
This represents a shift toward technology-driven policing in rural areas to enhance public safety and administrative oversight.
Kanniyakumari district police have recently launched a mobile application as part of its Oorkaval Kankanippu Thittam (rural policing and surveillance) initiative to ensure regular patrolling by police personnel assigned to specific villages.
As part of the initiative, two surveillance cameras have been installed at the entry point or major locations in each village. A police personnel from the local station will be in-charge of the village. Police officers have been directed to visit their assigned villages at least thrice a week to review the situation and to receive petitions from the villagers.
Sub Inspectors of the specific jurisdiction will conduct weekly inspection, Inspectors once in every two weeks and Sub Divisional Officers will make monthly visits to ensure accountability.
