Kanniyakumari police successfully solved a murder-for-gain case within six hours using a local CCTV surveillance network. Two suspects were arrested after police tracked their movements through the 'Oorkaaval Kankanippu Thittam' initiative.

The murder of a 77-year-old woman living alone in Vadiveeswaram on Sunday (August 30) sent shock waves among residents of Nagercoil. Within a few hours, the Kanniyakumari district police made a breakthrough, with the CCTV network installed under the “ Oorkaaval Kankanippu Thittam ” proving instrumental in tracking down the suspects.
The deceased, Chinnammal, 77, lived alone at Keezha Rathaveedhi in Vadiveeswaram under the Kottar police jurisdiction. When one of her daughters, who lived nearby, went to check on her after Chinnammal failed to respond to her calls, she found her mother murdered inside the house.
Police said Chinnammal had suffered injuries to her face and one of her hands was partially burnt.
Kottar police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. A case was registered and an investigation launched.
