Why it matters
The death of a recognizable pop culture figure marks a significant loss for fans of early 2010s music.
Lauren Bennett, the singer who performed on the 2011 LMFAO hit “Party Rock Anthem,” has died at 37, her former group, G.R.L., said Monday. “It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Lauren,” G.R.L. said in a statement on Instagram, which was signed by members Emmalyn Estrada, Natasha Slayton and Paula van Oppen. It is not clear how Bennett died. Bennett’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday. Bennett sang on “Party Rock Anthem,” which was No. 1 on Billboard’s chart for six weeks in 2011. The song was one of two songs by LMFAO to reach No. 1; the other was “Sexy and I Know It.” “Our hearts are broken, and we cannot begin to express how much she meant to us,” the members of G.R.L. wrote. “We will forever cherish the love, laughter, and countless memories she gave us,” they said. “Her beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and she will be deeply missed and forever loved.” Another member of G.R.L., Simone Battle, died in 2014. G.R.L. started in 2011 as a relaunch of the Pussycat Dolls but changed its name to G.R.L., Rolling Stone reported at the time. It was known for “Ugly Heart” and was featured on Pitbull’s hit song “Wild Wild Love.”
