Fourteen years ago, Rebecca Adlington headed into a home Olympic Games in London as the woman to beat in the women’s 800 freestyle. She was the reigning Olympic champion, setting a world record of 8:14.10 in Beijing four years earlier, the reigning world champion, and led the season rankings by a second in 8:18.54.
In that Olympic final, Adlington fell to third, with a 15-year-old Katie Ledecky taking the win in her first-ever international appearance. Since that swim in 2012, across seven World Championship finals, three further Olympic finals, and two Pan Pacific Championship finals, Ledecky had remained unbeaten.
Even when ill at the 2019 World Championships, when she withdrew from the 1500 freestyle and was beaten by Ariarne Titmus in the 400 freestyle, she managed to win this event in a time faster than anyone else had ever managed at that point, to keep the streak alive.
