Lady solon seeks probe of high Zamcelco power rates

Akbayan Representative Dada Kiram Ismula is calling for a congressional inquiry into the high electricity rates imposed by the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) following public complaints. She questions the disparity in rates compared to neighboring regions and plans to investigate issues like system loss.
Why it matters

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Akbayan Rep. Dada Kiram Ismula is seeking a congressional inquiry on high electricity rates being charged by the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) after customers trooped to the Zamboanga City Hall on Tuesday to air their complaints before Mayor Khymer Olaso. Ismula believes Zamboanga City consumers should not be charged rates higher than those in neighboring Zamboanga Peninsula cities and municipalities. She asked why Zamboanga consumers are being charged higher rates when power is sourced from one supplier. Zamcelco charges P13.4669 per kilowatt hour based on its published rates for September 2026. Ismula also said that she intends to inquire about system loss beyond the allowable rate and other matters plaguing the electric cooperative.
