Ladakh achieves feat of channelising 60 lakh litres of glacier meltwater
Ladakh has successfully constructed four large ponds under Project Him Sarovar to store 60 lakh litres of glacier meltwater. This initiative aims to provide irrigation for 1,000 acres of arid farmland and improve long-term water security in the cold desert region.

Tipped to cater to over 1000 acres of arid farmlands of Ladakh , the Union Territory administration on Wednesday (September 16, 2026) said around 60 lakh litres of glacier meltwater were being channelised through large ponds.
“Four large ponds, constructed under Project Him Sarovar at Spituk Farka in Leh, have now been filled with glacier meltwater in a record time of just five months. The work on the construction of the four large ponds started on April 10, 2026, and concluded with the recharge and operationalization of the fourth pond on September 9,” said Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena.
Officials said these large ponds will store approximately 60 lakh litres of glacier meltwater, store nearly 24 million litres of precious water, and prevent it from going waste.
