Labour plans to cut school uniform costs and allow 'affordable, generic' options
The New Zealand Labour Party has announced a policy to reduce school costs by mandating cheaper, generic uniform options and limiting branded requirements. The plan also includes restoring rural bus routes and reintroducing healthy school lunches by 2028.
Why it matters
This policy proposal highlights the political focus on cost-of-living pressures for families and the role of government in subsidizing essential educational services.
Labour wants to cut back-to-school costs for families by making school uniforms cheaper and allow for "affordable, generic" alternatives to be used as well.
Labour Leader Chris Hipkins says getting kids ready for school "shouldn't mean starting the term with another big bill."
"Families are already stretched, and school costs can push household budgets to the limit."
Hipkins said parents deserve a "fair go", and Labour would cut the cost of school uniforms, bring back healthy school lunches and work towards restoring rural school buses, "taking pressure off family budgets."
"Cost should never be a barrier to a good education. We're focused on making life more affordable for families," Hipkins said.
