Labour Day weather forecast: Heavy rain, 130km/h gales threaten the drive home

Severe gale-force winds are causing travel disruptions and safety hazards across New Zealand during the Labour Day holiday weekend. Authorities have issued warnings for power outages and advised against unnecessary travel as flights are cancelled and roads closed.
Why it matters
Extreme weather events significantly impact public safety and national infrastructure during peak travel periods.
High wind gusts have led police to close a stretch of a popular Wellington road after reports of multiple people falling from bicycles, and wing mirrors being blown off cars.
The safety concerns closed Oriental Parade from Carlton Gore Rd to the Maida Vale Rd intersection at Evans Bay Parade. The cordon was reduced after extending to Hataitai’s Rata Rd.
The orange strong wind warning for Wellington has been brought forward, beginning from 1pm today and ending 10am on Tuesday.
Severe gale northwest winds gusting 120km/h are expected and may cause damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures.
A spokesperson for Wellington Airport said 20 arriving flights have had to be diverted or cancelled so far due to the high winds and the number is likely to rise.
“We advise passengers to check directly with their airline for information on specific flights.”
