L-G Taranjit Singh Sandhu asks Municipal Corporation of Delhi to pilot Indore waste management model

Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to implement the 'Indore model' of waste management. The initiative aims to improve waste segregation at the source and reduce the volume of garbage sent to landfill sites.
Why it matters
Effective waste management is critical for urban sustainability and public health in rapidly growing metropolitan areas like Delhi.
Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to pilot the “Indore model” of waste management in one municipal zone to improve waste segregation and reduce the quantity of garbage reaching landfill sites.
During a review of civic services with the MCD officials, the L-G expressed concern that around half of Delhi’s municipal waste is still not segregated at source and nearly 50% of the garbage generated every day ends up at landfill sites.
Mr. Sandhu said the waste management system of the Indore Municipal Corporation, that has helped the city top the national cleanliness rankings several times, could serve as a model for Delhi. He said fresh waste must be processed scientifically to prevent new waste from piling up.
