KWA moots projects to address water scarcity in West Kochi

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has proposed a series of projects to address water scarcity in the West Kochi region. These include laying new pipelines, replacing ageing asbestos pipes with cast iron pipes, and increasing the frequency of water pumping. Kumbalangi, Mattancherry, and Chellanam are among the areas expected to benefit.
According to a KWA source, a major project to relay pipelines along the Pandikudi-Chellanam road is being considered. “The 10-km stretch has a distribution network of old asbestos pipes. Several pipelines pass through private properties and even beneath buildings. There are also hidden leakages. Addressing these issues will improve water availability in Chellanam,” the source said.
The KWA has been considering the project for some time, but funding remains a problem as it is expected to cost ₹35 crore to ₹40 crore, including road restoration.
