The festival, dedicated to Lord Gnanamutheeswarar and Goddess Mutharamman, is one of the prominent Dasara celebrations in south India.
Early on Sunday, the ceremonial flag was taken in procession through temple streets and was hoisted around 5 a.m. Following the ceremony, thousands of devotees tied the traditional kaappu, a sacred protective thread around their wrists.
Various Dasara groups and religious and social organisations distributed food, refreshments, drinking water and packed meals to devotees.
