KSRTC promises steps to ensure reserved seats for senior citizens on buses

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has committed to improving accessibility for senior citizens by ensuring reserved seating and exploring infrastructure changes. Proposed measures include a 20% seat quota, potential fines for unauthorized occupants, and physical modifications to bus designs for easier boarding. These changes follow complaints from various elderly advocacy groups regarding current transit conditions.
Why it matters
This initiative reflects a growing policy focus on inclusive public infrastructure and the protection of elderly rights in rapidly aging societies.
The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) management has assured the Kerala State Elderly Commission of stringent measures to ensure that seats reserved for senior citizens in KSRTC buses will be made available to them.
The assurance was given at a meeting of the commission held with KSRTC chairman and managing director Pramoj Shankar and other senior officials on steps to transform KSRTC buses into elderly-friendly means of public transport. The discussion was held in the wake of many complaints by various senior citizen forums.
Demands raised at the meeting included ensuring 20% of seats on KSRTC buses for senior citizens and earmarking a similar 20% quota for the elderly in online ticket bookings. An assurance was given by Mr. Shankar in this regard.
