Royal historian Andrew Lownie told the Daily Mail that King Charles has shown "more compassionate treatment" toward Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Consequently, the monarch hopes to prevent them from becoming permanent outcasts like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Edward VIII famously abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson. After stepping down, he and Wallis were effectively kept at a distance from the Royal Family for decades.
According to Lownie, Charles wants to avoid history repeating itself. "The Sussexes… have put the Royal Family in a difficult position," Lownie explained. "If they appear too unwelcoming they will be characterised as ill feeling – as happened with the Duke of Windsor."
