Key candidates to replace ECB president Christine Lagarde

Following the resignation of Christine Lagarde, the European Central Bank has begun the formal process of selecting a new president. Key candidates include Klaas Knot, a pragmatic policy hawk known for his long tenure at the Dutch central bank.
Why it matters
The leadership of the ECB is critical for setting monetary policy and maintaining financial stability across the Eurozone.
Candidates to replace European Central Bank (ECB) president Christine Lagarde have been positioning for months but Lagarde’s resignation on Thursday kick-starts a formal selection process that is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks.
The following are key candidates for the ECB presidency.
Klaas Knot: A trained monetary economist, Knot (59) served two full terms as the head of the Dutch central bank from 2011 to 2025 and has spent most of his time since then in an advisory role or campaigning for the ECB presidency.
His 14 years on the ECB’s rate-setting governing council can be characterised by two distinct periods: increasingly open hostility to then ECB president Mario Draghi’s stimulus measures and perfect harmony with Christine Lagarde, who succeeded Draghi in 2019.
