Keralam to focus on continuity of care in NCD management

The Kerala Health Department is launching the 'Hridayaragam' initiative to improve the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through a care continuum model. The program aims to address gaps in primary prevention and long-term treatment adherence for conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
Why it matters
As Kerala faces a high burden of lifestyle diseases, shifting from simple screening to coordinated, long-term care is critical for public health outcomes.
The Health department is all set to launch a new initiative to tackle the increasing morbidities and complications resulting from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Keralam by ensuring a care continuum and seeing to it that people are not lost to follow up.
Keralam went through a rapid epidemiological transition ahead of the rest of India because of an ageing population, coupled with rapid urbanisation, sedentary habits, high levels of stress and a dietary habit which was overwhelmingly carbohydrate-based, with very low consumption of fruits and vegetables.
It was not until the mid-to-late 1990s that Keralam recognised that achieving high life expectancy and excellent health indicators as that of developed nations came with a price.
