Keralam should pay more attention to issues of gender non-conforming children: NHRC special monitor

National Human Rights Commission special monitor for transgender, LGBT rights Gopi Shankar Madurai visited the office of the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights here on Thursday.
Mr. Gopi Shankar said that instead of labelling gender non-confirming children (GNCC) as transgenders, they should be approached from the perspective of differences of sex development. Keralam should be more alert in this matter. In the case of such children, the Health department should be directed to register their birth separately.
GNCC children should be given financial support, special shelter homes, and genetical counselling. Violation of their rights should be viewed seriously. Guidelines should be prepared in this connection, Mr. Gopi Shankar said.
