Keralam rebrands IT department to reflect AI, deep-tech push

The Kerala government has renamed its IT department to the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Future Technologies. This change aims to align the state's governance with global trends in AI, deep-tech, and semiconductor ecosystems.
Why it matters
The rebranding reflects a strategic shift toward knowledge-based industries and digital infrastructure as a core economic pillar for the state.
The State government has renamed the Electronics & Information Technology (IT) department as the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Future Technologies to align the State’s technology governance with emerging global priorities.
The change follows the announcement made in the Governor’s policy address for 2026 regarding the repositioning of the department in line with the State’s technology vision.
The decision reflects the expansion of the department’s mandate beyond conventional Information Technology and electronics. The department has also been closely involved in promoting start-ups, deep-tech ventures, and technology-led innovation.
“The renaming gives formal recognition to this broadened role and positions Keralam to respond more effectively to fast-changing developments in the global technology sector,” said a release.
