Why it matters
The alleged physical confrontation between security forces and a sitting Member of Parliament raises significant concerns regarding democratic norms and the treatment of political opposition.
John Brittas, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Rajya Sabha MP, was allegedly detained and assaulted by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel while he was speaking to the media in Delhi on Sunday (October 11, 2026).

Mr. Brittas told the media that he was abandoned by the road side later after the personnel assaulted him inside a police vehicle. Video footage showed CRPF personnel dragging him away while speaking to the media, even as he repeatedly told them that he was a Member of the Parliament.
“Although I told them I am an MP, the CRPF personnel continued to attack me. They pinned me to the seat and tried to choke me. This is the plight of an MP in this country. Whatever Delhi Police does, we will be in this struggle till our last breath,” he said.
