Kerala Police issues advisory against financial fraud using fake customer care numbers

The Kerala Police issued an advisory warning the public about cyber fraudsters using fake customer care numbers to steal money and personal data. Criminals are tricking victims into installing remote access apps or paying fraudulent registration fees.
Why it matters
As digital financial transactions increase, public awareness of common cyber fraud tactics is essential for preventing significant financial loss.
The police have advised the public to be on guard against cyber fraud using fake customer care numbers. The advisory was issued in the light of increasing incidents where people have fallen prey to criminals who trap them by posting fake customer care numbers on the internet.
When these numbers are dialled, the calls are not connected directly. The fraudsters call back posing as customer care agents. The police said money and personal information have been stolen after victims called such numbers for assistance and were tricked into installing remote access or screen-sharing apps and remitting ‘registration fees.’
