Kerala heavy rains LIVE: Kerala braces for the possibility of heavy rains today
The Kerala district administration has cancelled the Malabar River kayaking competition and banned riverbank access due to rising water levels caused by heavy rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for 12 districts, warning of potential flash floods and mudslides.
Why it matters
The alert highlights the ongoing vulnerability of Kerala to extreme weather events, necessitating proactive disaster management to prevent loss of life and infrastructure damage.
The district administration has cancelled all events related to the Malabar River, the annual white-water kayaking competition held on the Iruvazhinji River in Kozhikode, scheduled for today, due to heavy rain and inclement weather.
According to official sources, the water levels in the Iruvazhinji River and the Chali River have gone up considerably. All the training sessions there too have been banned.
The organisers and local residents have been barred from venturing to the banks of these rivers. Police, Fire and Rescue Services, have been deployed there. In an order, District Collector M.S. Madhavikutty has asked all the government departments to be on high alert.
Kerala braced for the likelihood of heavy rains and flooding on Sunday (August 2, 2026), the latest in a string of stormy days that have wreaked havoc across the State.
