Keppel, Sembcorp and Tuas Power to supply biomethane in pilot project
Keppel Energy, Sembcorp Utilities, and Tuas Power have been selected to import and supply biomethane to Singapore as part of a 15-year regulatory sandbox project. The initiative aims to decarbonize the power sector by using biomethane as a drop-in replacement for natural gas.
Why it matters
This pilot represents a significant step in Singapore's energy transition, testing a practical, low-carbon fuel alternative that utilizes existing infrastructure.
The sandbox will run for 15 years, with the companies expected to bring in their first supplies by end-2028
[SINGAPORE] Keppel Energy, Sembcorp Utilities and Tuas Power Generation have been appointed to import and supply biomethane as a renewable alternative to natural gas as part of a 300 megawatt (MW) pilot project.
Plans to set up the biomethane regulatory sandbox were first announced in October 2025 during the annual Singapore International Energy Week run by the Energy Market Authority.
The sandbox will run for 15 years, with the three power generation companies expected to bring in their first biomethane supplies by end-2028, said the Economic Development Board (EDB) on Friday (Oct 23).
