Kenya unveils early warning, action system to tackle floods before they strike

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen arrives at the Senate on Wednesday to respond to questions, September 16, 2026. /MINA Kenya is shifting its approach to floods under a new disaster risk management system from emergency response to early action before disaster strikes guided by periodic weather forecasts.

The broader strategy brings together national and county governments, security agencies, humanitarian actors and development partners under a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.

The Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) is the entity coordinating preparedness and response.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen told the Senate on Wednesday that the National Disaster Risk Management Strategy 2025–2030 had entered its foundational implementation phase, with the government developing systems to anticipate risks and take action before disasters occur.

The strategy was officially launched on June 18, 2025, in collaboration with line ministries, county governments and development partners.
