Keep Rugby League World Cup celebrations within 'reasonable hours', police say
Police in New Zealand are urging Rugby League World Cup fans to celebrate responsibly and keep festivities within reasonable hours. Authorities have noted complaints regarding late-night noise and dangerous driving behaviors during celebrations.
Why it matters
Public safety and community harmony are common concerns during major international sporting tournaments.
Police are urging those celebrating victories in the Rugby League World Cup to be safe, considerate, and keep festivities within "reasonable hours".
The World Cup began on 15 October with a trans-Tasman clash. More than half a dozen matches have taken place so far, with Samoa beating Papua New Guinea at home 6-64 on Saturday afternoon.
Inspector Keki Wilson said police had received a number of complaints where parades and celebrations in recent days had continued late into the night and early hours of the morning, impacting local residents and communities.
"It's been great seeing the support communities are showing for their team and country, with flags being showcased so proudly," he said.
However, Wilson said safety was the top priority.
