'Keep believing': Fernandez prolongs Canada's NBO run with upset win over Andreeva

Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez defeated world No. 5 Mirra Andreeva in straight sets at the National Bank Open in Toronto. This victory advances Fernandez to the Round of 16, where she is set to face Naomi Osaka.
Why it matters
Fernandez's performance represents a significant boost for Canadian tennis, as she remains the last local hope in the tournament.
TORONTO — Canada’s last hope at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers has provided tennis fans in this country with a serious shot of optimism.
Leylah Fernandez — the sole Canadian still standing in either the women’s or men’s singles draw in Toronto and Montreal — earned her first victory over a top-10 player in 2026 by downing world No. 5 Mirra Andreeva in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) on Friday afternoon at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.
Fernandez, ranked 34 th in the world and 30 th at the NBO, was downright dominant at times during her dismissal of the 2026 French Open champion. And when the 19-year-old Andreeva did start to find her game late in the second set, Fernandez dug deep and stayed the course.
Now she’s on to the Round of 16 at the NBO, where she'll take on Japan's Naomi Osaka, the tournament's No. 11 seed.
