Keelakarai residents express gratitude to Ramanathapuram Collector with ‘seervarisai’
Residents of Keelakarai in Tamil Nadu presented gifts to their District Collector to express gratitude for the swift resolution of a 40-year-old land patta issue. The Collector facilitated the survey and issuance of land documents within 30 days of the residents' petition.
Why it matters
It demonstrates the impact of local administrative responsiveness and the efficacy of public grievance redressal mechanisms in India.
Women expressed their gratitude by presenting gifts (‘seervarisai’) to the Ramanathapuram District Collector for taking action on residential lands in Keelakarai that had not been issued land pattas for many years.
In the Kanjanamkudi area of Keelakarai town in Ramanathapuram district, more than 150 people had not been issued land pattas for the houses they lived in and the lands they had been using for many years.
Consequently, the residents submitted a petition to District Collector M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran a month ago during the Public Grievance Redress Day meeting, requesting pattas.
Following the Collector’s orders, all the lands were surveyed and steps were taken to issue pattas.
To express their gratitude to the Collector for resolving this long-standing issue, more than 50 women from the area presented vegetables and fruits as gifts to the Collector during the Public Grievance Redress Day meeting.
