Why it matters
It highlights the ongoing tension between local community safety concerns and commercial licensing in residential areas.
The residents of Karuppayurani here staged a protest here on Monday against the recent opening of a recreational club with an attached liquor outlet in their area.
Arumugasamy, a resident of Vignesh Avenue, pointed out that the locality had remained free of Tasmac liquor outlets for the past four decades. “Our area is well known among the people here for its peaceful atmosphere and vibrant educational institutions,” he said.
He said due to the presence of five schools in the vicinity, authorities had consistently denied permission for Tasmac shops in the past. However, the newly opened club, which had a Tasmac sales counter attached, was located barely 50 metres from school campuses.
“We strongly opposed its opening in March and submitted a formal petition to the district administration, yet the club has been allowed to operate,” Mr. Arumugasamy added.
