Karnataka High Court strikes down law increasing reservation for SCs/STs, declares it unconstitutional

The Karnataka High Court has struck down a 2022 law that increased reservation quotas for SCs and STs, citing that it breached the 50% ceiling established by the Supreme Court. The court ruled that the enhancement was constitutionally impermissible.
Why it matters
This is a significant legal precedent regarding affirmative action and the constitutional limits on reservation policies in India.
In a major blow to the State government, the High Court of Karnataka on Monday struck down an attempt to increase reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) beyond the 50% ceiling, holding that the enhancement was “constitutionally impermissible.”
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice K.S. Hemalekha declared Sections 3 and 4 of the Karnataka Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and of Appointments or Posts in the Services under the State) Act, 2022 ultra vires the Constitution and struck down these two provisions.
