Karnataka government committed to supporting farmers amid severe drought: Parameshwara
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara has announced government support for farmers facing severe drought conditions, which have damaged nearly 90% of crops in the state. The government is seeking central assistance and has ordered the deferment of loan recoveries to provide relief.
Why it matters
The severe drought, impacting 216 taluks, threatens the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and highlights the economic strain on the state's agricultural sector.
Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister G. Parameshwara on Wednesday said Karnataka was facing one of the worst droughts in 75 years and assured farmers affected by crop losses that the State government was committed to supporting them.
After inspecting dried-up tur dal crops in fields at Halakundi village in Ballari taluk, Mr. Parameshwara told media representatives that severe drought had affected most parts of the State, except around 10 to 15 taluks in the coastal region.
“Two hundred and sixteen taluks have already been declared drought-hit and field-level assessment is under way in the remaining 23 taluks. Another 10 to 15 taluks are likely to be added to the drought-hit list shortly,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister claimed that around 90% of crops had been damaged due to deficient rainfall. Tur dal and jowar crops had suffered extensive damage, leaving farmers facing heavy losses.
