Karnataka CM and Dy. CM question BJP-led Union government on higher ethanol blends

Karnataka's Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have accused the Union government of failing to regulate ethanol blending in petrol, citing findings of levels exceeding the 20% limit. They argue that the policy harms vehicle engines and imposes financial burdens on citizens while failing to support farmers as promised.
Why it matters
This highlights a significant political and policy conflict between state and central governments regarding fuel standards and agricultural support.
Bengaluru Pointing to findings from petrol samples tested across the State showing ethanol blends higher than the prescribed 20% on the social media platform X, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the Union government cannot turn a blind eye to the violation of E20 norms and blend more ethanol, thereby imposing a financial burden on ordinary citizens. “Reduced mileage, potential vehicle damage and rising maintenance costs are concerns that deserve serious attention. It is unacceptable that consumers bear the cost while oil companies continue to report substantial profits,” he said. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara said the “Modi-led government had already forced E20 petrol on the people, despite serious concerns over reduced mileage, additional fuel expenses and compatibility with older vehicles,” and the findings by the Department of Legal Metrology, Karnataka, were even more alarming.
