Kanniyakumari fishermen seek ban on boat seine during fishing ban period
Kanniyakumari fishermen are calling for a ban on boat seines and light-fishing during the annual fishing ban season to protect juvenile fish populations. Fishermen have raised serious concerns over the use of boat seines, locally known as Thattu Madi, by fibre boats during the fishing ban season in June and July in Arabian Sea, arguing that the use of lights should be prohibited as they attract even fingerlings, along with the catch, posing a threat to marine environment.
The demand was raised at the fishermen grievance redressal meeting held at the district collectorate on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap.
Fishermen said that the use of boat seines involves the use of lights to attract fish. Fishermen argued that the use of lights should be prohibited as they attract even fingerlings, along with the catch, posing a threat to marine environment.
