‘Kanda Express’ to bring onions to Delhi; government to sell onions at ₹35/kg
The Delhi government is partnering with NAFED to stabilize onion and sugar prices by selling them at subsidized rates. A special train, the 'Kanda Express', is transporting 800 tonnes of onions to the capital to address rising retail costs.

The Delhi government will procure onions and sugar from the Centre’s National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) and ensure its availability across the Capital if prices rise further, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said in an official release on Tuesday.
“A review meeting on the availability and prices of onions and sugar in Delhi was held on Tuesday [August 25, 2026] under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The meeting noted that there is currently no shortage of onions or sugar in the capital. However, if prices rise further, the Delhi government will ensure that residents do not have to bear the additional burden,” the CMO statement said.
According to the CMO, onions and sugar will be sold at the procurement price, while the government will bear the transportation and other related costs.
