JSC recommends Judge Mbenenge’s suspension over sexual harassment
The Judicial Service Commission has recommended the suspension of Eastern Cape High Court Judge President Selby Mbenenge following findings of sexual harassment. Mbenenge is currently challenging the decision in court, arguing that a previous tribunal cleared him of the harassment charges.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has advised President Cyril Ramaphosa to suspend Eastern Cape High Court Judge President Selby Mbenenge.
The JSC, which met earlier this month to consider the matter, said that the advised suspension would be in place until the National Assembly votes on his possible impeachment over sexual harassment findings.
“At this meeting, the JSC resolved to advise the president to suspend Judge President Mbenenge from his duties pending the decision of the National Assembly as contemplated in section 177 of the Constitution,” the JSC said in a statement.

The decision follows sexual harassment allegations against Mbenenge brought by Andiswa Mengo, a judge’s secretary who worked in the court.
