Seven-time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe has been heavily criticised for his commentary at the 2026 US Open.
McEnroe was at Arthur Ashe Stadium for Mariano Navone’s unlikely first-round victory over Novak Djokovic on Sunday night.
Even though Djokovic was clearly unwell, Navone deserves great credit for his solid performance at Flushing Meadows.
However, McEnroe has caused a stir on social media with his comments about Navone’s upcoming second-round match.
While nobody believes Navone would have beaten a fully-fit Djokovic , his victory over the world number five was still impressive.
Djokovic had not lost a first-round match at a Grand Slam since the 2006 Australian Open against Paul Goldstein.
Navone will now face either Stan Wawrinka or Matteo Berrettini in the second round on Wednesday, which should be another exciting match.
However, John McEnroe cast a shadow over the Argentine’s achievement with a controversial comment.
