Joe’s Garage Wellington put in liquidation, Tory St cafe closed

The Wellington branch of the Joe’s Garage cafe chain has been placed into liquidation by the IRD, resulting in its immediate closure. The franchisor is currently working with the liquidator to determine if any path exists for the business to continue.
Why it matters
The closure reflects the ongoing financial pressures faced by small businesses in the hospitality sector.
Wellington has lost another popular cafe with the closure of Joe’s Garage after 13 years operating in the capital.
A note on the eatery’s front window says Wellybrew Limited, trading as Joe’s Garage Wellington, was placed in liquidation by the IRD last week.
Joe’s Garage started in Queenstown in 2000 and has grown to 19 locations nationwide, including Christchurch, Nelson, New Plymouth and Auckland.
The Wellington cafe opened on Tory St in the city centre in 2013.
No other cafes are affected by the liquidation.
A note on the Joe’s Garage website says the Wellington cafe is currently closed.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
James Whelan from Joe’s Garage Franchise Services Ltd said as franchisor, they will be engaging with the Official Assignee regarding the liquidation.
“We are seeking to understand what, if any pathway may exist for the Wellington business to continue.
