Jersey City moves to save 20-year community garden with $1.2 million purchase

For two decades, a small lot on Glenwood Avenue in Jersey City served as more than an empty parcel between buildings. Neighbours turned it into a community garden, growing tomatoes, peppers and other produce while creating a shared place to meet, work and learn. That informal arrangement changed when the property owner obtained permits for development, raising the possibility that the garden would disappear beneath a new building. After months of advocacy, the Jersey City City Council voted 7-0 on an initial reading to advance a $1.2 million purchase of the 128 Glenwood Avenue property for a pocket park and community garden.
