Jeff Gordon-backed Rwanda cancer centre saw over 18,000 patients by 2025
The Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence in Rwanda, supported by Jeff Gordon's foundation, has treated over 18,000 patients since its inception. The facility was established to address a critical shortage of oncology services and medical training in the region.
Why it matters
This initiative highlights the impact of international collaboration and private philanthropy in improving healthcare infrastructure in resource-limited settings.
A cancer diagnosis can change a life in an instant, but in Rwanda, access to treatment was once so limited that many patients had little chance of survival. A centre established in 2012 helped change that reality, bringing cancer treatment, medical training and research to a country where specialist care was scarce. Race car driver Jeff Gordon’s foundation contributed to the opening of the Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence, an initiative that has since treated more than 18,000 patients. According to Harvard Medicine Magazine, which documented the centre’s development in May 2025, the facility has also helped strengthen cancer screening programmes and train healthcare professionals, demonstrating how locally delivered care can expand access to treatment in resource-limited settings. Why Rwanda needed a dedicated cancer centreWhen Rwanda began developing its cancer treatment infrastructure in 2011, the country faced a serious shortage of specialist services.
