Japan Grants ETB 375M for Ethiopia Rice Sector

Japan has granted Ethiopia 375 million birr to modernize its rice production sector through the provision of agricultural machinery. The initiative aims to improve farming efficiency, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance national food security.
Why it matters
This investment supports Ethiopia's economic transformation goals by reducing reliance on food imports and increasing agricultural productivity.
Japan has agreed to provide Ethiopia with JPY 360 million, equivalent to about 375 million birr, in grant financing to supply agricultural machinery for rice production, harvesting and processing.
The grant agreement, signed by Ethiopia’s Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Japanese Ambassador Shibata Hironori and Hiroyuki Yakushi, chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Ethiopia office, will finance equipment including combine harvesters, tractors, rice-milling machines and land-preparation machinery.
The package is intended to address several stages of the rice value chain, from preparing farmland and harvesting crops to processing rice after harvest. The government said the equipment is expected to improve field operations, raise processing quality and reduce post-harvest losses.
