It was good conversation, we agreed to put past behind us: Pezeshkian on meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince on the sidelines of the BRICS summit to improve bilateral relations. The meeting signals a potential shift in regional diplomacy ahead of upcoming Iran-GCC talks.
Why it matters
Diplomatic thawing between Iran and UAE is a significant development in West Asian geopolitics, potentially impacting regional security and trade routes.
A day after holding a rare meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday (September 13, 2026) described it as a "good conversation" and said that both sides agreed to put the past behind.
Mr. Pezeshkian held talks with Sheikh Khaled on the sidelines of the BRICS summit that was seen as some kind of ice-breaker between the two sides.
"We had a good conversation with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and agreed to put the past behind us and look to the future," Pezeshkian said on Sunday (September 13, 2026), according to the Iranian embassy.
Relations between the two countries came under severe strain after Iran targeted many U.S. bases in the UAE in the last few months as part of its retaliation for the U.S. attacks on Iranian installations.
