Ireland winning captain Forker announces retirement

Aidan Forker, the captain who led Armagh to an All-Ireland football title in 2024, has announced his retirement from inter-county Gaelic football. His departure follows a wave of recent retirements from the Armagh squad, marking the end of a significant era for the team.
Why it matters
Forker's retirement is a major development for Irish sports, specifically the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), as the team transitions into the 2027 season.
Armagh's All-Ireland winning captain Aidan Forker has retired from the inter-county game.
The 34-year old Maghery defender made his Armagh debut in 2012, soldiering for several years as the county struggled to make an impression in the latter stages of the championship.
Elevated to the captaincy in 2024, it would become one of the most unforgettable years in Armagh's history, as they made a bolt from the pack in the knockout stages, reaching the All-Ireland final where they beat Galway 1-11 to 0-13.
Forker became the second Armagh man to lift the Sam Maguire Cup after his manager Kieran McGeeney had done so 22 years earlier.
He picked up his sole All-Star that year at centre-half back.
Battling injury throughout 2026, Forker was introduced as an extra-time substitute as Armagh finally got over the line against Monaghan to collect their first Ulster title in 18 years.
