Iran Guards say struck vessel in Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Revolutionary Guards reported striking a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz after it allegedly disabled its transponders and ignored warnings. This incident occurs amidst ongoing regional tensions and a blockade of the waterway following the outbreak of war in West Asia.
Why it matters
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy chokepoint, and military escalations there pose significant risks to global oil supply and geopolitical stability.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they struck a vessel on Monday (October 12, 2026) that was attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that is crucial to global energy flows.
Iran has imposed a blockade on the strait since the United States and Israel launched strikes against the Islamic republic in February, triggering the war in West Asia.
The blockade has been met with a U.S. counter-blockade of Iranian ports, and U.S. forces routinely escort vessels crossing the strait.
Iran has since the start of the war frequently targeted vessels crossing Hormuz without its permission.
The Guards' navy said in a statement published on the force's news platform, Sepah News , that "a supertanker, was hit in the Strait of Hormuz and caught fire".
