IPU chief backs people

Outgoing IPU President Dr. Tulia Ackson urged parliamentarians to prioritize citizen engagement and transparency to combat declining public trust. She emphasized that diversity and listening to marginalized voices are essential for effective governance in an era of global crises.
Why it matters
Strengthening parliamentary trust is critical for maintaining democratic stability amidst rising global polarization and complex socio-economic challenges.
ARUSHA: INTER-PARLIAMENTARY Union (IPU) outgoing President Dr Tulia Ackson has called on parliamentarians to put citizens at the centre of good governance by strengthening transparency, accountability and participation in decision-making.
Dr Tulia made the remarks in Arusha on Tuesday during the 153rd IPU Assembly, saying good governance should not be treated as an abstract principle but as a practical responsibility requiring institutions to respond effectively to changing realities while giving citizens a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their lives.
She said the world is facing multiple and interconnected crises, including conflicts, inequality, climate change and economic pressures, while rapid technological developments are transforming how people live and interact with institutions. “Our institutions themselves are under pressure.
Parliaments have been asked to respond to more complex challenges, often at greater speed,” she said.
