Apple has added variable aperture to the main camera on both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This will offer users a physical way to control how much light reaches the sensor for the first time on an iPhone.The feature sits alongside a new 48MP Fusion Main camera, a redesigned sensor and new Pro Controls. Apple says the six laser-cut blades inside the lens can move between four aperture settings, while the camera can also adjust the aperture automatically depending on the scene.That sounds like a minor hardware upgrade. But it is not. The lens opening affects exposure, depth of field, and how motion is captured, so giving the iPhone aperture control adds something software alone can't quite duplicate.Apple's description is straightforward: "iPhone 18 Pro has a new 48 megapixel fusion main camera with variable aperture for creative control that wasn't possible before," Apple said.
