IOM-Led Study Exposes Severe Gaps in Food, Health, and Protection Services Across Tigray Displacement Sites
A new IOM-led study reveals severe deficiencies in humanitarian aid, including food, healthcare, and protection services, across displacement sites in Ethiopia's Tigray region. (Nairobi, Kenya) — A multi-agency assessment led by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has revealed critical deficiencies in food, healthcare, shelter, water, and protection services across displacement sites in the Tigray Region.
The comprehensive study, conducted in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) Cluster, evaluated 78 displacement sites spanning 5 zones and 21 districts, representing nearly 307,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs).
While 95 percent of the assessed sites receive some form of food aid, the report highlighted that the assistance remains grossly insufficient to meet basic nutritional needs. Similar shortfalls were documented across the health, education, and shelter sectors, with 36 sites receiving zero shelter support.
Water and sanitation infrastructure across the region faces severe operational strain. Only four of the 78 sites report adequate water and sanitation services, while 27 sites lack services entirely, and 47 operate under insufficient provision.
