Intelligence: IMF Outlook: Container Shipping Under Strain

An analysis of the IMF's economic outlook suggests that global trade growth is slowing, complicating container shipping logistics as manufacturers shift production away from direct China-US routes. Additionally, the AI hardware boom is driving up trade values despite minimal increases in physical shipping volumes.
Why it matters
Understanding these shifts is critical for global supply chain management and predicting the economic impact of trade wars and technological transitions.
In issue 787 of the Sea-Intelligence Sunday Spotlight, we analysed the IMF October 2026 WEO report, from a container shipping perspective. The report predicts that world trade volume growth will drop from 5.0% in 2025 to 4.7% in 2027. In advanced economies, import demand is projected to be 5.0% in 2026 but soften to 4.2% in 2027. This means that demand is not growing fast enough to absorb all the newly built vessel capacity entering service.
